We are recruiting!

Becoming a Mentor at the Academy of Modern Celebrancy

Mentors play a central role at the Academy of Modern Celebrancy. They are a key part of the student experience, offering practical guidance, honest feedback, and steady support as students train and take their first steps into professional celebrancy.

Because mentoring is such an important responsibility, we are thoughtful and intentional about who we invite into this role. Our mentors combine real-world experience with professional maturity, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

Core experience requirements

To be considered as a mentor at the Academy of Modern Celebrancy, you will normally meet both of the following criteria:

  • At least three years’ experience working as a practising celebrant.
  • A minimum of 60 real-world ceremonies delivered.

These requirements work together. Time in practice builds perspective and confidence, while ceremony volume brings exposure to a wide range of clients, emotions, and real-life situations. Both are essential when guiding others through their own journey.

Recent and active practice

We expect our mentors to be actively engaged in celebrancy. This helps ensure the advice and support students receive reflects the current realities of the profession.

This means you will normally have:

  • Delivered at least 15 ceremonies in the past 24 months
  • Been active within the past 12 months

Ceremony experience

We welcome mentors with experience across a range of ceremony types, including:

  • Weddings
  • Funerals and memorials
  • Naming ceremonies
  • Vow renewals and other bespoke ceremonies

Some mentors support students across multiple ceremony pathways, while others specialise in a particular area. Both approaches are valued, and we aim to build a mentoring team with a broad mix of experience.

Business and professional practice

Mentoring at the Academy goes beyond ceremony writing alone. Our mentors also support students with the practical realities of working as a celebrant.

You should therefore have experience running your own celebrant business, including:

  • Managing client relationships
  • Working to deadlines and schedules
  • Professional communication
  • Day-to-day organisation and self-management

You do not need to be a business expert, but you should understand the realities of self-employment in this profession and be comfortable sharing practical, honest insight.

Working remotely

All mentoring at the Academy is delivered remotely. We therefore look for mentors who are able to:

  • Work independently and manage their time effectively
  • Meet agreed deadlines and commitments
  • Be available at times that suit a largely UK-based student community

Supporting students

Our mentors are people who genuinely enjoy supporting others. This includes:

  • Flexibility to arrange mentoring sessions as needed
  • Responding to student queries within agreed timeframes
  • Providing calm, supportive, and constructive guidance

Mentors play an important role in helping students build confidence as well as competence.

Communication and professionalism

Clear communication is essential in this role. We expect mentors to be confident, professional communicators, particularly in writing. This includes:

  • Clear, encouraging, and constructive written feedback
  • Strong spelling, grammar, and tone
  • Comfort using email and online learning platforms

Mentors must also demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and strong alignment with the Academy’s values, as well as the ability to work collaboratively as part of a wider mentor team.

Exceptional circumstances

We recognise that every professional journey is different. In limited cases, we may consider applications where one element of the experience criteria is slightly below the usual threshold, provided there is strong evidence of mentoring capability, professional maturity, and suitability for the role.

These cases are considered individually and do not replace our standard criteria.

Our aim

Our aim is simple. Every student at the Academy of Modern Celebrancy should be supported by mentors who have lived experience of celebrancy and the confidence to guide others with care, honesty, and integrity.

If you meet the criteria and feel passionate about supporting the next generation of celebrants, we would love to hear from you.
