No formal qualifications are legally required to become a celebrant in the UK. However, professional training is essential for success. Quality training provides mentorship, industry knowledge, client management skills, and the practical experience needed to deliver meaningful ceremonies. While you can legally perform ceremonies without training, the difference in quality and professionalism is immediately apparent to venues, suppliers, and most importantly, the families you serve.

Wedding venues and Funeral Directors are increasingly asking for proof of training, and all require working celebrants to have Professional insurance.

An NOCN-recognised qualification provides credibility, access to insurance, and professional recognition.

Law Reforms and Professional Qualifications

It is worth noting that England and Wales are currently undergoing a consultation on Marriage Laws. The proposed Law Reform recommends that Celebrants be included in the changes, allowing them to legally marry couples. If these recommendations are accepted, then it's likely there will be a requirement for professionally recognised training.

For the Master Celebrant Combined Training, you’ll have 12 months for each certification from the date of purchase to complete your certification course (36 months in total from date of purchase), giving you plenty of flexibility to study at your own pace.

We recommend completing the self-study portion within 8 months. This allows enough time for your 1:1 mentored training, which runs for a set period (9 weeks for Wedding and Funeral, 4 weeks for Naming) and must also be completed within the 12-month window.

Some students complete the course in just a few weeks, while others spread it out over several months. On average, most take around 3–6 months.

You’ll learn practical techniques from celebrants who are already fully booked, with tried-and-tested strategies you can apply straight away. By the time you graduate, you’ll have both the professional qualifications and the confidence to step into your new career.

In the UK, celebrancy and the legal registration of marriage are two separate things. Independent celebrants are not currently able to conduct legally binding weddings in England and Wales, regardless of which training provider they choose. That means there is no additional certificate or extra spend that suddenly makes a celebrant’s ceremony legal here. Couples either have a short legal appointment with a registrar, often on a different day, and then choose a celebrant to create and lead their meaningful ceremony, or they choose a registrar-led ceremony for both elements.

Our training focuses on what celebrants actually do in practice: creating and delivering personalised ceremonies for weddings, funerals and namings, and learning how to build a sustainable celebrant business. With that training, yes, you can absolutely become a practising celebrant and start working with real couples and families. Many of our graduates are working celebrants across the UK and internationally.

It is also worth noting that Scotland, Ireland & other countries work differently, as celebrants there can legally marry couples once authorised through a recognised body, but that is specific to Scottish law and does not apply in England and Wales.

Once you enrol, you’ll be invited to join our private Facebook group, the AMC Student Hub — a warm, welcoming space where you can connect with fellow students and stay inspired. You’re also welcome to email us any time with questions or if you need a helping hand. You'll also be notified of our next onboarding session where we'll answer any questions you have as a new starter.

There are fortnightly group Q&A sessions with our mentor team if you have any questions.

Throughout the self-study portion of your course, you’ll work through modules at your own pace. Once you complete these, you’ll receive personalised feedback on your work — and then you’ll be paired with your mentor to begin your 1:1 mentorship.

This mentorship lasts 9 weeks for our Wedding and Funeral courses, and 4 weeks for Naming. During this time, you’ll get invaluable insights, individual guidance, and constructive feedback to help you grow in confidence and prepare to graduate as a professional celebrant.

Once you've graduated, you'll get 3 months' free membership (6 months for the Master Celebrant pathway) to The Celebrant Guild with Professional Insurance, and a listing on The Celebrant Directory included, live 'get unstuck' sessions, regular training and workshops and access to our training library.

Yes, you will be certified by The Academy of Modern Celebrancy once you have completed your training. You will receive a certificate, an online badge and a physical badge to show your affiliation and course completion.

For the Master Celebrant Certification, you'll receive a badge and certificate for Weddings, Funerals and Naming Celebrancy.
