No formal qualifications are legally required to become a celebrant in the UK. However, professional training is essential for success. Quality training provides mentorship, industry knowledge, client management skills, and the practical experience needed to deliver meaningful ceremonies. While you can legally perform ceremonies without training, the difference in quality and professionalism is immediately apparent to venues, suppliers, and most importantly, the families you serve.

Wedding venues and Funeral Directors are increasingly asking for proof of training, and all require working celebrants to have Professional insurance.

An NOCN-recognised qualification provides credibility, access to insurance, and professional recognition.

Law Reforms and Professional Qualifications

It is worth noting that England and Wales are currently undergoing a consultation on Marriage Laws. The proposed Law Reform recommends that Celebrants be included in the changes, allowing them to legally marry couples. If these recommendations are accepted, then it's likely there will be a requirement for professionally recognised training.

For the Master Celebrant Combined Training, you’ll have 12 months for each certification from the date of purchase to complete your certification course (36 months in total), giving you plenty of flexibility to study at your own pace.

We recommend completing the self-study portion within 8 months. This allows enough time for your 1:1 mentored training, which runs for a set period (9 weeks for Wedding and Funeral, 4 weeks for Naming) and must also be completed within the 12-month window.

Some students complete the course in just a few weeks, while others spread it out over several months. On average, most take around 3–6 months.

Absolutely. The Master Celebrant Training is designed for both complete beginners and those seeking a career change. We start with the foundations of celebrancy and build step by step, so you’ll always feel supported and ready for the next stage.

Not yet! Currently in the UK, independent celebrants are unable to legally marry couples. However, there is a lot of work being done to get this changed and does not make the popularity of having a celebrant any less!

Once you enrol, you’ll be invited to join our private Facebook group, the AMC Student Hub — a warm, welcoming space where you can connect with fellow students and stay inspired. You’re also welcome to email us any time with questions or if you need a helping hand.

Throughout the self-study portion of your course, you’ll work through modules at your own pace. Once you complete these, you’ll receive personalised feedback on your work — and then you’ll be paired with your mentor to begin your 1:1 mentorship.

This mentorship lasts 9 weeks for our Wedding and Funeral courses, and 4 weeks for Naming. During this time, you’ll get invaluable insights, individual guidance, and constructive feedback to help you grow in confidence and prepare to graduate as a professional celebrant.

Yes, you will be certified by The Academy of Modern Celebrancy once you have completed your training. You will receive a certificate, an online badge and a physical badge to show your affiliation and course completion.

For the Master Celebrant Certification, you'll receive a badge and certificate for Weddings, Funerals and Naming Celebrancy.
