At the Academy of Modern Celebrancy, we take immense pride in our mentors who guide and inspire the next generation of celebrants. Today, we’re thrilled to spotlight Julie Chudleigh, who began as one of our first students and has since become one of our most sought-after mentors. Her story perfectly illustrates how a career transition into celebrancy can lead to profound personal and professional fulfilment.
From Education Leadership to Authentic Celebrancy
Before discovering celebrancy, Julie held a senior leadership role in the education system. While she found great reward in connecting with students and working with parents, she felt increasingly disillusioned with the system itself. “I was working for people that weren’t always authentic,” Julie shares candidly. “I was working alongside senior leaders who were not always as honourable as you might have hoped they would be in those circumstances.”
This experience became a catalyst for change. After witnessing a particularly egocentric colleague secure funding for his private school venture, Julie had an epiphany: “If he can do this, I can do this.” She realised she possessed more authenticity and integrity, and these values could be the foundation for a new career path.
Transferring Skills in Unexpected Ways
Interestingly, the qualities that were sometimes criticised in her education leadership role became her greatest strengths as a celebrant. “Some of the soft skills that I’ve got – the compassion, the empathy, the kindness – even the organisational side of things, being able to draw people together, to read between the lines… being able to take those skills and employ them” proved invaluable in her new role.
Julie found that every thread of her previous experience could be woven into her celebrancy work, from managing the business aspects to writing ceremonies and supporting families through significant life events.
Finding Joy in Every Aspect
When asked about the best part of being a celebrant, Julie’s enthusiasm is infectious: “Everything. I mean, that’s a really cliched answer, but absolutely everything.” She particularly values the independence of working from home, meeting people and hearing their incredible life stories, and using her life experience to hold space for people during both celebrations and times of grief.
Most importantly, Julie finds that every effort she puts into her work brings immediate rewards – both personally and professionally. “There isn’t a single element of this that I could say to you is not a reward, it is spectacular,” she shares with genuine passion.
Coming Full Circle: From Student to Mentor
Julie’s journey with the Academy of Modern Celebrancy represents a beautiful full-circle moment. Her background in running professional development courses gave her a keen eye for quality training programs, making her choice of training provider particularly meaningful.
“Because I was so heavily involved in running courses, whether it was professional development for teachers or professional development for inspections in schools, I was used to kind of assessing and giving that level of professional development. So, when I was looking for a training course, I knew what to look for,” Julie explains.
What stood out to her about the Academy was the exceptional level of detail and professionalism in every aspect of the training. “What came across so clearly online was just the level of detail and professionalism in every aspect,” she shares. Julie particularly appreciated how the course filled gaps in her expertise: “I’ve got certain strengths already. I’m really comfortable with public speaking, but I hadn’t got any idea about the social media marketing. I’d not had to do any of that for myself.”
Now, as a mentor, Julie has gained an even deeper appreciation for the Academy’s commitment to excellence. “Behind the scenes, I get to meet a whole team of experts, who are just at the top end of the profession,” she reflects. “Even people guiding me – Jen, Penny, some of the other people within the academy – I cannot fault it. I think it’s an incredible company and at the top end of everything it could possibly be.”
The transition from student to mentor has allowed Julie to witness the Academy’s growth firsthand. “Oh my Jen, what you and the team have done with the academy is just phenomenal,” she enthuses. “What you have done since is just phenomenal, it’s blown it out of the water.”

Mentoring: A Natural Extension
As a mentor with the Academy of Modern Celebrancy, Julie brings her extensive background in professional development to support new celebrants. “Being able to support and guide people by focusing on what they already do brilliantly, and then coaching and guiding and mentoring… it’s just such a thrill,” she explains.
Her experience in education helps her assess and guide mentees effectively, while her genuine passion for celebrancy inspires those she works with. Julie particularly values the collaborative environment at the Academy, noting how the team of experts behind the scenes continues to help her grow and learn.
Advice for Aspiring Celebrants
For those considering becoming a celebrant, Julie’s advice is refreshingly direct: “Just do it.” She acknowledges that doubts are natural, especially in uncertain times, but emphasises the importance of listening to that inner voice that says, “What have you got to lose?”
“If you’ve got this burning desire… just do it,” she encourages. “You will not believe the rewards that can come your way.”
