The Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) certification in Celebrancy is a nationally and internationally recognised qualification that takes you step by step through your training.
The course begins with several self-study modules where you’ll be assessed through multiple-choice questions and written submissions. This foundation prepares you to move on to writing ceremony scripts, which are reviewed by our practising celebrant mentors who provide detailed feedback and professional guidance.
The course culminates in a live ceremony assessment, giving you real-world experience and ensuring that you graduate feeling confident and ready to perform as a celebrant. You’ll be supported throughout by our experienced mentors and community of celebrants.
The Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) certification is designed to be flexible, allowing you to study at your own pace around work and family commitments. Most students complete their training in around three to six months, although some progress more quickly and others take longer depending on the time they can dedicate each week.
Because the programme is entirely online, you can start at any time and study from anywhere in the world. Each student receives one-to-one support from an experienced celebrant mentor during their training.
Yes. The Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) welcomes students from across the UK, including Scotland. Our online celebrant training is designed to be fully flexible, allowing you to study from anywhere while receiving one-to-one mentoring and guidance from practising celebrants who understand the Scottish market.
Celebrancy in Scotland offers unique opportunities, as independent celebrants there can apply to become authorised to conduct legally binding marriages — something not yet available to celebrants in England and Wales. AMC’s training provides you with the professional skills, ceremony writing expertise and confidence to work either as a non-legal or legal celebrant once authorised by an approved organisation.
Our blog How to Become a Celebrant in Scotland: Your Complete Guide explains the steps involved in becoming a celebrant in Scotland and is a worthwhile read.
Yes. The Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) welcomes students from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Our online courses are fully flexible and internationally recognised, allowing you to complete your celebrant training from anywhere with dedicated mentoring and support from practising celebrants across the UK and Ireland.
Celebrancy in Ireland continues to grow rapidly, with an increasing number of couples choosing non-religious and personalised ceremonies. Independent celebrants in Ireland can offer either symbolic ceremonies or, once approved by an authorised body, conduct legally binding marriages. AMC’s training gives you the creative, professional and business skills to work confidently in either capacity, preparing you for the Irish market and beyond.
Our blog Becoming a Celebrant in Ireland explores the pathways to celebrancy and the opportunities available across the country.
Absolutely not. Many of our most successful celebrants joined the Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) after long and varied careers in other fields. Celebrancy attracts people with life experience, empathy and strong communication skills, qualities that often grow richer with age.
Whether you have worked in teaching, healthcare, management or creative industries, those experiences become valuable assets when leading ceremonies and supporting families. In fact, many of our graduates describe celebrancy as a natural next chapter, a meaningful and flexible career that draws on everything they have learned in life so far.
Yes, absolutely. The Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) training is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to study at your own pace and fit your learning around your existing work or family commitments.
Because the course is delivered entirely online, you can access your materials at any time of day and progress whenever it suits you. Most students dedicate a few hours each week and complete their training in around three to six months, but you can take longer if needed.
Each module builds your skills gradually, beginning with self-study lessons and multiple-choice assessments, followed by writing ceremony scripts and taking part in live mentoring sessions. You will also perform a live ceremony assessment, giving you the confidence and experience to lead real-life ceremonies once you qualify.
Many of our graduates began their celebrant journey while working full-time and have since transitioned into celebrancy as a rewarding new career.
Yes, you can. Many students at the Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC) choose to train in all three disciplines — Weddings, Funerals and Namings — to broaden their skills and create more opportunities once qualified. The courses are designed to complement one another, allowing you to study them either individually or together as part of our Master Celebrant Training programme.
If you choose to complete all three courses at the same time, you will follow the same structured learning pathway. You will begin with the self-study modules, complete your multiple-choice and written assessments, then move on to creating and submitting ceremony scripts for each type of ceremony. Every student is paired with a practising celebrant mentor who provides guidance, feedback and support during your studies.
Because the training is entirely online and self-paced, you can work through each module at a speed that suits you. Most students who take all three qualifications together complete them within six to nine months, depending on the time they can dedicate each week.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, independent celebrants cannot yet legally marry couples. Only registrars and certain religious officiants are currently authorised to conduct legally binding marriage ceremonies. However, couples increasingly choose a celebrant-led ceremony because it allows complete freedom to personalise their vows, location and style of celebration.
Most couples complete the short legal paperwork at a register office, then hold their celebrant ceremony as their true wedding celebration in front of family and friends. This approach has become the preferred choice for thousands of modern couples who want a ceremony that reflects who they are.
In Scotland and Ireland, the situation is different. Independent celebrants can become authorised to conduct legal marriages once approved by a recognised organisation. AMC’s training provides the professional skills, creative expertise and ceremony experience required for both symbolic and legal ceremonies, preparing you to work confidently wherever you are based.
Whether a celebrant is able to legally marry someone or not will depend on the laws of the country in which the ceremony takes place.

Your earnings as a celebrant depend on the number of ceremonies you conduct each year, how much you charge, your location and the types of ceremonies you offer. Because you are self-employed, your income potential is entirely in your hands.
According to The Academy of Modern Celebrancy’s 2025 data, wedding celebrants typically charge between £500 and £1,500 per ceremony, with some earning up to £2,500 for bespoke celebrations. A celebrant conducting 20–50 weddings a year could therefore earn anywhere between £17,000 and £62,500 annually.
Funeral celebrants tend to earn between £200 and £600 per ceremony, often performing several services per week. A celebrant leading three funerals a week could earn £34,000 to £48,000 a year. Naming ceremonies generally range from £200 to £750, and are often offered alongside weddings or funerals as an additional income stream.
Many full-time celebrants combine all three specialisms to maintain steady work year-round, while others add alternative ceremonies such as vow renewals, gender affirmation, or commitment ceremonies, which can earn between £250 and £1,500 each.
When you join the AMC, you will become part of a team of celebrants that will help you to push your business forward
