Start Your Celebrancy Journey in Ireland
Ireland's celebrant industry is flourishing. Whether you're drawn to creating joyful wedding celebrations, supporting families through funeral ceremonies, or welcoming new life with naming celebrations, celebrancy offers a rewarding career that combines creativity, compassion, and the flexibility to work around your life.
And here's what makes Ireland unique: Understanding the legal landscape is crucial for your success. Our training includes comprehensive guidance on Ireland's specific regulations, so you'll know exactly how to position yourself professionally from day one.
Understanding Celebrancy in Ireland: Legal Framework Explained
For Funeral & Naming celebrants
Great news for Naming & Funeral Celebrants: there are no legal restrictions in Ireland. Once you've completed your professional training with AMC, you can offer ceremonies that reflect the wishes and beliefs of the families you serve. You're free to create meaningful, personalised ceremonies that honour life's most important transitions.
For Wedding celebrants
Ireland has a specific legal framework for wedding ceremonies that's important to understand before starting your training.
In Ireland, the authority to legally solemnise marriages comes from the Registrar General for Scotland through the General Register Office (GRO), not from any training provider. This means that completing celebrant training, even with an accredited organisation like AMC, does not automatically authorise you to conduct legal weddings.

However, this does not limit your opportunities. Many celebrants in Ireland choose to offer non-legal (symbolic) ceremonies – deeply personal celebrations that couples often see as their real wedding, even though the legal paperwork is signed separately with a registrar.
Important terminology: In Ireland, a person authorised to legally marry couples is called a solemniser. Not every celebrant is a solemniser, but every solemniser is a celebrant.
Two Pathways for Wedding Celebrants in Ireland
Independent celebrants create deeply personal, meaningful wedding ceremonies that are not legally binding.
Couples complete their legal paperwork with a registrar either before or after their ceremony, but the celebrant-led event is where the emotion, symbolism and storytelling truly happen.
Independent celebrants can:
- Work with any couple, regardless of belief or background
- Include any religious, spiritual or cultural elements
- Conduct ceremonies anywhere – indoors, outdoors, or even abroad
- Offer vow renewals and commitment ceremonies
This pathway offers complete creative freedom and is where most new celebrants begin their journey.
Celebrancy in Ireland: Insights from Hitched by Connie
Connie Keough has been creating memorable ceremonies across Ireland since discovering celebrancy at a woodland wedding venue where she was working. What started as curiosity became a calling – and she hasn't looked back since.
What Makes Irish Celebrancy Special
Flexible ceremony days: "Sunday weddings are very popular in Ireland, as are Monday weddings. Fridays and Saturdays too, of course. It gives couples real flexibility in planning their celebrations."
The importance of heritage: "You might not be a practising Catholic, but maybe your grandmother brought you up and said certain prayers with you every night. If your grandmother's at your wedding and you'd like that prayer included in your ceremony, you absolutely can have that. That's what makes celebrancy so beautiful – it honours what's meaningful to you."
Symbolic ceremonies are valued: "Some couples come from the US having already done their legal paperwork, and we create their symbolic ceremony in Ireland. To many couples, these vows in front of their loved ones are more important than the paperwork. It's about declaring your commitment in front of the people who matter most."
Memorable Irish Ceremonies
Connie's ceremonies have taken her across Ireland's stunning landscapes and venues:
"I recently married two gorgeous men – one from the US, one from Ukraine – in a beautiful Irish castle. It was magical on so many levels. Absolutely gorgeous."
From historic castles to intimate garden settings, beach ceremonies to grand hotel ballrooms, Irish celebrants have the freedom to create ceremonies that showcase Ireland's natural beauty whilst honouring couples' unique stories.

The Reality of Being a Celebrant in Ireland
The rewards: "After every ceremony, there's at least one couple who'll come up to you or contact you saying they saw your ceremony and would love you to do theirs. The work grows organically through the connections you make."
The challenges: "The work is flexible, but the hours can be unsociable – weekends, evenings. Your discovery calls with couples take place in the evenings, around their work schedules. But you know these times well in advance, so you can plan around them."
The emotional journey: "When you get home after a ceremony, bang – that's when the exhaustion hits you. You're holding all that emotion throughout the day, the happy emotions, but also the difficult ones. Many couples are at that stage in life when parents are ill or have passed away. You know their story, you're holding that for them, and when you get home, you let it go."
