Can Anyone be a Celebrant? Train to be a Celebrant

Can anyone be a celebrant?

So can anyone be a Celebrant? In simple terms yes, anyone can train! But, it takes a special type person to become entrusted with creating magical ceremonies that turn a very special day into an event the couple or family will remember forever. Could you be that person?

Of course, becoming a Celebrant isn’t for everyone, but it can be hugely fulfilling for those who choose it as a career path or second career. Celebrants work in an amazingly wide range of contexts – from weddings to funerals, from baby namings and vow renewals.

This is not limited of course. The Funeral Industry is vast and there are so many options for more modern send-offs these days. Green Funerals, Natural Burials and Direct Cremations are on the rise, lending a more creative goodbye for loved ones with Celebrations of Life, Memorials and Living Funerals.

What does a Celebrant do?

A Celebrant is a trained professional with life experience of helping people or celebrating life events. Celebrants are facilitators, not performers or entertainers. Celebrants provide guidance and suggestions to their clients, but it’s ultimately up to the client what elements they will choose for their event.

What makes a good Celebrant?

To be a successful Celebrant you will need to be organised, compassionate, have great attention to detail, interested in literature, a good writer and have a passion for working with people. Celebrants are self directed, they work to their own individual career path and set their own rates.

If you’re business minded or have a passion for marketing, you’ll be used to the demands of this amazing career choice. Networking is key to becoming a recommended supplier across the wedding industry and funeral profession, so if you’re great at meeting new people, you’ll thrive off of being a Celebrant.

“Ultimately the difference between a good Celebrant and a great Celebrant is someone who walks the walk, not just the talk. Communication is key with clients and there are a lot of deadlines. Effectively managing your time reflects on client satisfaction, so a Celebrant who has great reviews over Instagram followers is way more valuable.” – Jennifer Claire | founder of the Academy of Modern Celebrancy.

What qualifications do I need to be a Celebrant?

There are no formal qualifications needed to train to be a Celebrant. You need to have both personality and a passion for writing and meeting people. If you’ve got that you’re half way there!

What does Celebrant training involve?

Celebrant training typically covers everything from writing and delivering ceremonies, conducting rituals and the history or meaning behind them. For funerals, Celebrant training covers the above plus guiding loved ones through grief and healing plus working with a range of family members to create a beautiful send-off. Celebrants help people celebrate their most important occasions in life so it’s really important to have some sort of formal training behind you.
