The Celebrant’s Journey
In recent years, the celebrant profession has seen remarkable growth, with more people seeking personalized, meaningful ceremonies for life’s most significant moments. But what does it truly mean to be a celebrant, and what hidden benefits await those who embark on this unique career path?
Penny Boycott, a seasoned celebrant and training manager at the Academy of Modern Celebrancy (AMC), puts it best: “I’ve never known anything quite like this job. It’s absolutely brilliant. The benefits of becoming a celebrant are almost endless; I’ve never experienced anything like it in any other industry.”
As we delve into the world of celebrancy, we’ll uncover five hidden benefits that make this profession not just a job but a life-changing journey.
1. Emotional fulfillment & Celebrancy: it’s more than just a job
The heart of celebrancy
At its core, being a celebrant is about connecting with people during their most significant life moments. Whether it’s a joyous wedding, a heartfelt funeral, or a celebratory naming ceremony, celebrants are there to guide, support, and create unforgettable experiences.
Penny, a Wedding, Funeral, and Family Celebrant, shares, “The reward is about serving the client. It’s about being with somebody in their most vulnerable state, whether that’s a bride, a new mum, or a husband who’s lost his wife of 60 years.”
Building lasting connections
One of the most rewarding aspects of celebrancy is the opportunity to build long-term relationships with clients. As Penny notes, “I had it last week, when a family came back to me several years down the line and said, ‘You might not remember us, but we’ve just had our first baby.'” These ongoing connections create a sense of continuity and purpose that few other professions can match.
2. Professional and personal growth: A career that evolves with you
Continuous learning and development
Celebrancy is a field that encourages constant growth and adaptation. As societal norms and expectations around ceremonies change, celebrants must evolve their skills and offerings.
“When I look back 20 years, and I think what ceremonies I’m doing 20 years ago, they’re not the ceremonies I’m doing now,” Penny reflects. This constant evolution keeps the job exciting and allows for ongoing personal and professional development.
Diverse ceremony types
One of the exciting aspects of being a celebrant is the variety of ceremonies you can perform. From weddings and funerals to naming ceremonies and even divorce ceremonies, the possibilities are endless. This diversity allows celebrants to specialize in areas they’re passionate about or to offer a wide range of services.
3. Community and support: A network like no other
A unique sense of camaraderie
The celebrant community is known for its exceptional support and camaraderie. Penny emphasizes, “I’ve never experienced that sense of community before, where everybody comes together. Yes, we’re all trying to find wedding clients. Absolutely. But being able to feel comfortable, surrounded by everybody doing the same job as you is brilliant.”
The AMC difference
At the Academy of Modern Celebrancy, this sense of community is nurtured from day one. “Our students, the camaraderie the students is just amazing. You see them all networking in our facebook group and supporting and going out for coffee and picking up ceremonies when somebody’s ill,” Penny shares. This support system is invaluable, especially when starting a new career.

4. Work-life balance: Flexibility and autonomy
Be your own boss
One of the most attractive aspects of being a celebrant is the ability to control your own schedule. Penny notes, “I don’t think I’ve ever had that ‘ugh, work tomorrow’ feeling.” This flexibility allows celebrants to balance their work with personal commitments and passions.
We’ve got Celebrants who book destination weddings and take their whole family along for the ride. Their partner entertains the kids whilst they’re working, but then they’re in a gorgeous location, and they can enjoy the rest of the time exploring with their family.
Tailoring your workload
As a celebrant, you have the freedom to decide how many ceremonies you want to perform. Whether you’re looking for a full-time career or a part-time passion project, celebrancy can accommodate your lifestyle. As Jennifer, director of AMC, points out, “You can be as busy as you want to be. There is nothing stopping you from doing 50 ceremonies in a year.” In fact, one of our AMC alumni, Andrew D Scott, loves being a celebrant so much that he booked over 175 ceremonies in his first 2 years!
5. A confidence boost: Looking and feeling your best
Dressing the part
This is one of those benefits of becoming a celebrant that no one talks about, but don’t underestimate its feel-good factor! Being a celebrant often means dressing professionally for ceremonies, which can be a significant confidence booster. Jennifer mentions, “It’s so nice to be able to wear nice clothes, like you know, and go out and feel important.” It’s great to be able to get some wear out of all those gorgeous clothes in your wardrobe, or build a wardrobe just for your celebrancy work.

Feeling a sense of purpose
Beyond just looking good, being a celebrant gives you a sense of importance and purpose. Jennifer emphasizes, “You are important. And again, another thing that we miss in life sometimes… this is an opportunity for you to go and be a celebrant, go out there and you are the most important element at that time. Without you, the ceremony wouldn’t take place.”
Conclusion: A career that changes lives – including your own
Becoming a celebrant offers benefits that go far beyond the obvious. From the deep emotional fulfillment of helping people through life’s most significant moments to the supportive community and flexible lifestyle, celebrancy is a career that can truly change your life.
As Penny reflects, “You almost forget it’s a job, I often think, I can’t believe I’m paid to do this!…and how many careers can you say that in?”
